14th Scientific Meeting of the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society

WELCOME ADDRESS

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the established Autumn Meeting of the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society, which will take place in Arachova on 28 and 29 November.

Taking into consideration the interest and participation shown by its members in our previous one-day and two-day meetings, the Society’s Board of Directors aims to enrich the scientific, educational, and social activities of the Arachova programme. Its goal is to fulfil the Society’s mission and comprehensively address the needs of all its members, as well as ophthalmology residents and young ophthalmologists.

We hope that meeting, interacting, and exchanging knowledge, experiences, and views at our “autumn home” will enrich us both scientifically and socially.

LETTER SENT TO THE ATHENS MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (ISA)

Following optometrist Ms Skoutari’s participation in a recent radio programme, during which there were once again indications of the unlawful practice of medicine, the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society wishes to inform you that it recently sent a letter to the Athens Medical Association requesting that the matter be referred to the competent authorities, concerning both this and other interviews she has given from time to time.

Unfortunately, Ms Skoutari has previously drawn the attention of the ophthalmological community through programmes addressing specialised topics such as the retina and retinal diseases. These programmes remain available on a relevant channel to this day. In them, she manifestly engages in the unlawful practice of medicine by offering advice on conditions for which she has neither the necessary training nor the legal authorisation.

Scientific associations remain vigilant regarding matters affecting patients and the ophthalmological community in general. They take whatever action is required in each case, either independently or collaboratively, always with the same objective: to refer to the justice system those whose words or actions undermine scientific standards in ophthalmology and medical ethics as a whole.

Academic Year 2024–2025 Scholarship

The Board of Directors of the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society announces a scholarship for the 2024–2025 academic year for postgraduate studies abroad in surgical retina and ocular oncology (choroid and retina).

One scholarship will be awarded to an ophthalmologist accepted by a centre abroad. The Society will provide a monthly allowance of €500 for one year.READ MORE

Academic Year 2024–2025 Scholarships from the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society

The Board of Directors of the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society announces the scholarships to be awarded during the 19th Panhellenic Congress.

Colleagues who receive awards in the special competition sessions, as well as those who achieve the highest scores in the EBO examinations, will have the opportunity to attend major European congresses (EURETINA, FLORetina, and COPHy), with registration, accommodation, and travel expenses covered.READ MORE

Academic Year 2023–2024 Scholarships from the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society

DECISION ON THE 2023 GENETICS SCHOLARSHIP

The extended Board of Directors of the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society, comprising the current Board and the Immediate Past President, reviewed the candidates’ CVs and decided to award the Genetics Scholarship to ophthalmologist Evangelia Panagiotou, as her qualifications demonstrate direct relevance to the subject.

The scholarship is awarded for 12 months, from 1 November 2023 to 31 October 2024.

Should Ms Panagiotou discontinue her advanced training before the end of this period, the scholarship for the remaining term will be awarded equally to ophthalmologists Evangelia Chalkiadaki and Christina Karakosta. The amount will be divided between the two colleagues, provided that they both remain in advanced training.

2021 Scholarships

The Board of Directors of the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society, continuing its efforts to support the continuing education of Greek colleagues, has decided to fund the attendance of 20 ophthalmologists, either residents or qualified specialists, at Greek and international seminars and congresses in 2021. Eligible candidates must register to attend the Society’s congress this year.READ MORE

Academic Year 2020–2021 Scholarships from the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society

Regarding the call for scholarship applications for postgraduate studies abroad in surgical and medical retina during the 2020–2021 academic year, we would like to announce that, following the application deadline and a detailed review of the candidates’ supporting documents, the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society unanimously decided to approve their applications.

The successful candidates, in alphabetical order, are:

Asterios Diafas
Nikolaos Mamas
Andromachi Rapanou

Monthly payments of €500 per recipient will commence in January 2021. In addition to the payment for January, the first instalment will include any retroactive amounts due for a period in 2020 during which a recipient is officially confirmed to have begun their postgraduate programme.

Payments will then be made monthly for one year. Every three months, recipients must submit an updated certificate to the Society confirming their continued participation in the postgraduate programme.
