Medical Acupuncture and Actions Taken by the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society

The Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society wishes to inform its members that it submitted urgent letters to the Athens Medical Association in July and November 2020, requesting an investigation into potential criminal and other liabilities concerning an establishment in Athens that advertises acupuncture as a treatment for several eye conditions.

Following the Athens Medical Association’s initial actions to investigate how these services were promoted and the establishment’s scientific director, the Society sent a further letter concerning the necessary follow-up measures. A response from the Athens Medical Association is pending.

In light of this correspondence and our close monitoring of the matter, we are sharing a recent statement by the Hellenic Acupuncture Society, published on the website of the Panhellenic Association of People with Retinal Diseases, which clarifies the appropriate scope of acupuncture use.

Call for Applications for the Master’s Programme “Medical Imaging in Ophthalmology”

The Department of Medicine at Democritus University of Thrace invites interested candidates to apply for admission to the Master’s Programme entitled “Medical Imaging in Ophthalmology” for the 2020–2021 academic year. The programme leads to the award of a Master’s Degree.

The programme focuses on postgraduate teaching, research, and practical training in medical imaging of the visual system.

Academic Year 2020–2021 Scholarships from the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society

During this year’s Society Congress, the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society announced scholarships for postgraduate studies abroad in surgical or medical retina during the 2020–2021 academic year.

Three scholarships have been announced for ophthalmologists accepted by centres abroad. The Society will provide each recipient with a monthly allowance of €500 for one year.

Due to COVID-19 and possible related delays, the application deadline has been extended to 31 December 2020.

Letter from the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society to the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities regarding the resumption of services: Ophthalmic Surgery, Injections, and COVID-19 Testing

Dear Members,

Below is the letter from the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society, which was sent to the Ministry of Health and other government authorities on May 3, 2020, requesting clarification of Ministry document No. 455/29-04-2020 concerning the “Gradual resumption and scheduling of routine surgical procedures and regular outpatient clinics in the country’s public hospitals and private clinics,” as well as the performance of COVID-19 testing on a case-by-case basis.
