During this year’s Society Congress, the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society announced scholarships for postgraduate studies abroad in surgical or medical retina during the 2020–2021 academic year.

Three scholarships have been announced for ophthalmologists accepted by centres abroad. The Society will provide each recipient with a monthly allowance of €500 for one year.

Due to COVID-19 and possible related delays, the application deadline has been extended to 31 December 2020.

Terms and Conditions:

1. Applicants must have completed the required period of specialist training and obtained a specialist qualification recognised by the Greek State.
2. Applicants must have been accepted into a postgraduate or fellowship programme in surgical or medical retina with a total duration of at least one year.
3. The programme must commence between 1 June 2020 and 1 February 2021. Applications with similar commencement dates will be considered if an insufficient number of applications is received within the above period.
4. Applicants must submit two certified copies of their original specialist qualification, their CV, and a letter of acceptance from a centre abroad. The letter must include the centre’s details, the title of the postgraduate programme, and its commencement date, and must be accompanied by an official translation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
5. Application files must be submitted electronically to the Society’s email address and by courier to its postal address no later than 12:00 a.m. on 31 December 2020.
6. Applications will be reviewed by the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Vitreoretinal Society, and the names of the three successful applicants will be announced by 15 January 2021.
7. If the Society receives more than three applications, the selection process will also take into consideration the terms of the position offered, including the monthly remuneration provided, the applicant’s family financial circumstances, and their CV. Applicants may therefore be asked to submit additional supporting documents clarifying the above.
8. Each of the three successful applicants will receive €500 per month for one year from the commencement of their programme. The amount will be paid into a Greek bank account in four quarterly instalments. Continued participation in the programme will be confirmed by email with the recipient and, where necessary, the programme supervisor at the beginning of each quarter.
